Rules & Basic Strategy
The most basic rule of Baccarat is that you need at least two players (although you can play with one if you choose) and that you must place bets on all the cards in your hand. In fact, you are only allowed to bet on those cards which have not already been played. For example, if you have seven cards, and your opponent has eight, then you can place a bet on each card up until the seventh. However, if you have six cards, and your opponent has seven, then you cannot bet on any of their cards.
It’s a good idea to keep track of how many cards have been played so far. There are several ways in which you can do this. You can write down the number of cards you think your opponent has, and add that to your own total. Alternatively, you can use a scorecard; these typically come with two little pencils (one for each player); they are used to mark off cards as they’re played.
As mentioned earlier, the goal of the game is to get more points than your opponent. This makes it important to have a good understanding of what constitutes a winning hand, because you want to win every time possible. A pair of aces will almost always beat a single ace. If your opponent does not have a pair of aces, then he is likely to have something else in his hand.
A straight flush is defined as five cards of the same suit. The chances of getting a full house or four-of-a-kind are very slim, but when you do happen to get them, you’ll be extremely lucky!
There are other types of hands which are considered “better”, such as a King and Nine, or Four of Spades. These are called “natural” wins against the banker, and you should try to make sure that you get them whenever possible.
If you don’t have enough money to continue betting, then you should simply wait until your opponent either loses or runs out of chips. If you’ve gone too long without making a bet, your opponent can declare bankruptcy (“bust”) by placing three cards of the same suit into the pot.
In general, it’s best to stay with the same player throughout the game, but it’s also common for people to switch from player to player during the course of the evening. This happens particularly when the players become bored with the current game and decide to move onto another table.
Once all the cards have been played, both players take turns adding up their scores. Any cards which were originally marked off by a player on the same side as the winner are deducted from his score. So if there was a pair of aces in your hand, and they were marked off, you’d lose the value of the pair. Your opponent gets the remainder of the cards which haven’t yet been added together.
For instance, if you had seven cards and your opponent had nine, you would gain two points for each card which hasn’t been taken away by the other player. Then you add up your points and compare them to your opponents’. If your score is higher, you win. If it isn’t, your opponent wins.
How Much Does A Hand Win By?
To calculate the amount of the pot based on the hand you’ve won, multiply the final score by 2.5. This is called the “point spread”. When you go to the casino to play, you’ll find that the dealer will give you a sheet showing you what the point spread and pot odds are for each particular hand.
For example, suppose you are playing against a man who has $20 in front of him, and you have $30 behind you. You decide to go all-in with $100 worth of chips, hoping that you get a natural win like a king and nine, or perhaps four of spades. If you win, you expect to win $400, or 4 x $200 = $800. If your opponent busts out, then you’ll receive $300, or 3 x $200 = $600. If you win, you’ll receive $500, or 5 x $200 = $1,000. If your opponent busts out, you’ll receive $300, or 3 x $200 = $600.
In this case, you would be expected to win about $650, or 6 x $200 = $1,200. That means that the house edge is around 10%. If you lost, however, you’d be expecting to win only $350, or 3 x $200 = $600. In that case, the house edge would be around 20%!
Playing With A Banker
When you sit down at a Baccarat table, you will usually be offered a choice between playing against a dealer or a player. Playing against the dealer is a risky strategy, but it has its advantages. Firstly, it allows you to concentrate on the game rather than worrying about whether you have enough cash to pay the bills later. Secondly, the dealer will not be able to cheat you as easily as the other player, since he won’t know your exact position in the game. Finally, if you are playing against a person, you can actually watch his cards being dealt to see exactly what cards he has.
